Dopo la somministrazione orale, tale forma di dosaggio si conserva nell'addome/stomaco. Rilascia il farmaco in un modo (tasso) predeterminato. A tal fine, il farmaco potrebbe essere equipaggiato per raggiungere i siti di assorbimento all'interno del tratto gastrointestinale superiore. La forma di dosaggio gastro-ritentiva può rimanere nella regione intestinale o gastrica per molte ore e quindi prolungare notevolmente il tempo di permanenza gastrica del farmaco.
