In dentistry, zirconia has been indicated and used for making crowns, bridges, abutments and implant prosthesis infrastructures. As is well known, dental ceramics are often associated with brittle fractures, due to their low resistance to fracture, which has delayed the routine clinical use of all-ceramic prostheses. The introduction of stabilized zirconia has created a real possibility and promise for the application of ceramics in dental reconstructions. However, the mechanical properties of zirconia are not still great and a suitable processing and clinical application protocol is still notfully known and controlled. This study is a compilation of zirconia and its various aspects which include advantages, disadvantages, indications, contraindications, history, dental uses, prosthetic rehabilitation and complications.
