Now I Am Here is the account of a fictional soldier as he faces the end. It is an examination of why we do what we do. The Officer in the story has no name or nation. While out for a walk, he stumbles upon officers enjoying a military barbecue. He is persuaded to join them and enjoys the comradeship of the event. He is seduced by the smart, tailored military uniform he is later fitted with, the impact it has on others. From there, this gentle man is gradually transformed into a war criminal - relocating the Easties from their homes and villages using whatever force is required. Now I Am Here by Chidi Ebere is a profound reflection on how good people can do terrible things - transformed by circumstances and the violence of war. This morally complex and nuanced novel is brave, unflinching and thought-provoking. It feels timeless and will appeal to readers of Uzo Iweala''s Beasts of No Nation , Giles Foden''s The Last King of Scotland and Abdulrazak Gurnah''s Afterlives .
