Bladder cancer begins when the cells that make up the bladder begin to grow uncontrollably. As more cancer cells grow, they can form a tumour and, over time, spread to other parts of the body.Bladder cancer is the second most common cancer of the urogenital tract after prostate cancer, with an incidence of over 300,000 cases per year worldwide, representing 5-8% of all cancers. In Canada, it is the sixth most common cancer and the ninth leading cause of cancer death, with an estimated 1,800 deaths estimated in 2008. In Switzerland, in 2015, 1130 new patients were diagnosed with diagnosed with bladder cancer and 520 died from it, while in the United States, each year there are approximately 80,000 new cases of bladder cancer and bladder cancer and nearly 17,670 deaths (2019 estimates) related to it.
