Civil society in Algeria has grown dramatically since the Algerian civil war, despite the violence, huge loss of life and mass exile witnessed throughout the 1990s. In defiance of these conditions, thousands of associations were formed during the conflict. Associations were set up to protect human rights and vulnerable populations, commemorate those assassinated and to promote Algerian heritage. There are now over 93,000 associations registered across the country.This book traces the development of civil society in the country since the Algerian civil war. Based on extensive fieldwork, Jessica Northey shows how associations have challenged government policy and play an increasingly important role in the stability and future peaceful relations of the MENA region.In this new paperback edition, Jessica Northey also includes an additional ''Part IV'' to cover the mass street protests that shook Algeria in 2019.
