Composed in 1862 when Liszt learned of the ultimate impossibility of his marriage to Princess Carolyne the two transcriptions from Mozart's 'Requiem' of 'Confutatis maledictis' and "Lacrymosa' hint at contrition mixed with hope mixed with acceptance.
