This book is an ancient Greek adaptation of the classic fairy tale Hansel and Gretel by the Brothers Grimm and was designed to help beginner level students acquire new vocabulary easily without having to rely on a translation or a dictionary. By using a familiar story with illustrations that depict common objects and actions, the reader can infer the meaning of new words and therefore expand their knowledge of ancient Greek as a living language.
We are confident that the story of Hansel and Gretel now made available in ancient Greek for the first time will inspire students to broaden their vocabulary while increasing their reading proficiency.
This book is the result of the authors' years of experience teaching ancient languages at Polis - The Jerusalem Institute of Languages and Humanities, an academic institution founded in 2011 by an international group of scholars. The goal of the Polis Institute is the renewal of the Humanities -especially literature, philosophy, history, and geography of the Mediterranean basin and the Middle East- through the study of different cultural aspects and in particular the revival of the languages that are at the foundation of Western civilization.
About the author
Linguist Christophe Rico has a doctorate in ancient Greek and holds the French official accreditation to direct PhD research. Member of the Faculty of the University of Strasbourg, he is Professor of Greek Philology at the Ecole Biblique of Jerusalem. Since 2011, he directs the Polis Institute at Jerusalem where ancient languages (Greek, Latin, biblical Hebrew, Syriac, Coptic, classical Arabic) are taught through full immersion as living languages according to the "Polis method."
Peter J. Gentry received his PhD from the University of Toronto in Septuagint and the ancient Near East in 1994; since 1999 he is Professor of Old Testament at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has edited Ecclesiastes for the Gottingen Septuaginta, co-authored Kingdom Through Covenant, and provides leadership for the Hexapla Institute.
