(Vasilije Dj. Krestic)

-----

In these late essays, the great poet Jovan Ducic writes with the candor of a witness and the discipline of a classicist. "I Believe in God and in Serbdom" gathers his political and historical reflections from exile-texts shaped by war, displacement, and the search for a moral lexicon adequate to catastrophe. Ducic's prose is elegant but unsparing: he names illusions, records losses, and insists on responsibility as a measure of national life. For readers of Central and Eastern European nonfiction, this collection offers both a primary document of the era and a writer's bracing attempt to tell the truth without rancor or resignation. Written with clarity and restraint, this edition favors character and mood over plot summary, so shoppers get the feel without spoilers. It is presented in a modern, accessible way for new readers.
