About the author
Allison C. Carey is Professor of Sociology at Shippensburg University. She has been teaching and researching in the field of sociology of disability for over 25 years. Allison was one of the founders of ASA's section on Disability in Society, and served as Chair of ASA's Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities. She co-founded the Disabilities Studies program at Shippensburg, and served as its director for 6 years. She regularly teaches Sociology of Disability, Introduction to Disability Studies, and a capstone Sociology Department course on disability. Allison's published work includes:
Allies and Obstacles: Disability Activism and Parents of Children with Disabilities (Temple University Press, forthcoming 2020, first author) and
On the Margins of Citizenship: Intellectual Disability and Civil Rights in Twentieth Century America (Temple University Press, 2009). She has also co-edited two volumes on disability including

In 2021, Allison named the second recipient of the
Outstanding Career in the Sociology of Disability Award from ASA′s Section on Disability in Society.
