Die Moderne ist der prägendste architektonische Ausdruck des 20. Jahrhunderts - eine Bewegung, die die gebaute Umwelt in beispielloser Weise verändert hat. Viele dieser Gebäude sind allerdings heute reparaturbedürftig oder ihre ursprüngliche Funktion ist obsolet geworden, sodass eine Umnutzung notwendig wird. Diese Publikation in Zusammenarbeit mit Docomomo untersucht Strategien zur Sanierung von Werken dieser Epoche. Expertinnen und Experten diskutieren die Herausforderungen bei der Erhaltung von Werken der Moderne. Anhand von 24 herausragenden Beispielen werden verschiedene Restaurierungsansätze vorgestellt. Dazu gehören unbekannte Trouvaillen wie die Calouste-Gulbenkian-Stiftung in Lissabon oder das Wohnhaus, das Juan O'Gorman fur seinen Vater in Mexiko gebaut hat - Eingriffe, die die Authentizität der Architektur respektieren.

Ana Tostões (b. Portugal, 1959) is an architect, architecture critic, and historian. President of Docomomo International and Editor of the Docomomo Journal (2010-2021). Full Professor at IST-University of Lisbon, where she is Architecture Scientific Board Chair, in charge of the Architectural PhD program, and leader of the heritage research line of CiTUA. She has a degree in Architecture (ESBAL), a master's degree in History of Art (UNL), with a thesis entitled Os Verdes Anos na Arquitectura Portuguesa dos Anos 50 (FAUP Ed.,1997) and holds a PhD (IST-UL) on culture and technology in Modern Architecture (Idade Maior, FAUP Ed., 2015), awarded with the X Bienal Ibero-Americana de Arquitectura y Urbanismo Prize. Her research field is the critical history and theory of Modern Movement architecture, focusing on the worldwide cultural transfers. Within this field she has published books and essays curated exhibitions, and given lectures. She coordinated the research project focused on the modern Sub-Sahara African architecture, whose publication Modern Architecture in Africa: Angola and Mozambique (2014) was awarded with the Gulbenkian APH Prize 2014. She edited the book Cure and Care. Architecture and Health (2020).
