I thoroughly explore the connection between national identity (especially everyday nationalism) and food from an ethnographic perspective, a new approach in social sciences


This is an in-depth ethnography into the contemporary situation in Catalonia, which gives greater, in-depth insight into the region than other research which is not based on year-long ethnographic fieldwork


Due to the ethnographic approach, the level of detail on everyday national identity expression, food identity and Catalan identity is very high.


It covers a wide range of topics while retaining an in-depth study into Catalan gastronationalism, covering issues such as national dishes, food heritage, cookbooks, national days, landscape, territory and national identity.

About the author

Venetia Johannes is a post-doctoral research affiliate at the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography, University of Oxford. She was co-editor of The Emergence of National Food: The Dynamics of Food and Nationalism (Bloomsbury, 2019), and has published chapters and articles on Catalonia, food, nationalism, and heritage.
