The reality of happiness and suffering does not depend on external causes, it is inherent in the nature of mental states. It is for this reason that the re-education of the mind makes it possible to diminish moments of pain and suffering and to replace them with happiness and equanimity. To make this possible it is necessary to follow a routine of self-discipline, and to be able to apply it it is necessary to possess the correct understanding of the nature of the Self and the mind. There are selfish acts and unselfish acts of pure compassion. The former are always associated with the various variations of suffering, while the latter allow us joy and the expansion of the mind into the whole universe. Every state of happiness depends on an interaction between one and the other, along with the environment around us. Compassion allows us to see goodness in all beings and for them to feel favored and blessed by our actions towards them.So to live happily the key condition is that we practice selfless love for others around us. This also frees us from thoughts tainted by selfishness, jealousy, hatred and anger.
