About the author










Peter S. Carmichael is the Fluhrer Professor of Civil War Studies and the director of the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College. An expert on 19th-century US history, the Civil War and Reconstruction, and southern history, he is the author of several articles and books, including The War for the Common Soldier, and he has appeared on PBS's American Experience as well as the Emmy-nominated TV show Who Do You Think You Are?.
