Advances in fish reproduction and their application to broodstock management : A practical manual for sea bass
A great deal of information has been obtained concerning reproductive physiology in marine fish under captivity conditions. Advances in sea bass reproduction includes studies related to holding facilities and management of broodstock, oocyte development and hormonal treatments for induction of spawning, assessment of gamete quality as well as evaluation of ploidy manipulations for sex control. The present manual is a synthesis of the current state of knowledge of these methodologies applicable to the control of reproduction and broodstock management in this species. This practical manual compiles a total of 13 protocols commonly used at the laboratory scale. They have been organized in 5 sections that include (i) Sampling procedures ; (ii) Broodstock management ; (iii) Sperm quality ; (iv) Chromosome set manipulation ; (v) Verification of the ploidy ; and (vi) Sexing and tagging.
The manual is intended as a handbook to assist students and technicians entering this field as well as investors interested in evaluating the complexity of the reproductive process in fish, with a special emphasis on some reproductive aspects of the sea bass. The authors present and discuss those procedures, commonly used in European sea bass, based on their own experience from working with this species for more than 30 years.
The manual has been prepared as a result of the organization of two editions of the course on « Advances in Fish Reproduction and their Application to Broodstock Management » held in February 2003 and February 2007 and organized by the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) through the Institute of Aquaculture of Torre de la Sal (IATS) and the International Centre for Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM) through the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza (IAMZ).
