About the author
Sarah Bassett is Associate Professor in the Art History Department at Indiana University and author of The Urban Image of Late Antique Constantinople (Cambridge, 2004). Her research interests include late antique urbanism, collecting and display in the late antique world, and the historiography of late antique and Byzantine art.
Summary
This book describes Constantinople between the fourth and the fifteenth centuries. It discusses practical matters of urban infrastructure together with the administrative, social, and cultural institutions that gave the city life. It examines visitors' encounters with one of the great cities of the middle ages.
