About the author
Apollonius of Rhodes (third century BCE) was a Greek poet and scholar who studied under Callimachus at the Library of Alexandria. Historians claim it was there that his greatest work, the
Argonautica, was written but ultimately rejected by his peers. Apollonius would flee to Rhodes to revise the epic and return to great acclaim. Some report he was appointed chief librarian but eventually left the city to spend his final years on the island of Rhodes.
