Description

The peculiar political situation of partially recognized countries such as North Cyprus is such that the nation faces a lot of political and economic embargoes which basically limits its ability to participate equally alongside other more recognized countries. The impact of these embargoes though mostly felt in the economic and political environments, however, has serious implications for the social interaction of citizens of these de-facto states and citizens of recognized countries. This is clearly visible in the area of sporting activities. Although sports are generally held to be a uniting force that brings together communities and nations, this does not hold true in all instances for unrecognized nations. Indeed many have argued that in many cases, it has been used as a tool to divide and punish members of unrecognized nations.
