About the author

SW Jacobsz graduated with a MEng degree from the University of Pretoria in 1996 and PhD from the University of Cambridge in 2002. He then worked on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link Project in London and a UK government funded collaboration between the University of Cambridge and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on the development of wireless displacement sensors before returning to South Africa where he worked for Jones & Wagener Consulting as geotechnical engineer. He joined the University of Pretoria in 2010 and is an associate professor in the Department of Civil Engineering. His research interests include physical modelling of geotechnical and soil-structure interaction problems in the geotechnical centrifuge.

Summary

More than 60 papers were received representing consulting engineers and engineering geologists, contractors, academics and product specialists. The wide range of topics is considered to be thoroughly representative of the activities of the geotechnical industry in the Southern African Region.
