Phytotherapy is the use of plant origin complex chemicals and therapeutic agents. The practice of phytotherapy is based on the history of traditional use, but it differs from conventional herbal medicine available in native by employing extraction and manufacturing techniques. Phytochemical screening of medicinal plants is essential to find out and develop novel therapeutic agents with improved efficacy to address various health related issues of mankind. Number of researchers from scientific community are engaged in phytochemical screening and reported similar findings throughout the globe.Plant based chemical components could be developed as drugs with specific selectivity. Plants serve as a store house for novel potential lead compounds which provide the clue for modern drug design. Synthesis of novel compounds with definite activity to treat various health ailments and chronic diseases can be possible by understanding the correlation between the phytoconstituents and the bioactivity of plant.

About the author










Dr. Kirankumar Shivasharanappa completed his Graduation(2009) and Post graduation(2011) in Biotechnology from Department of Biotechnology, Gulbarga University. During is Doctoral research (2012-2016) he worked on medicinal plant Ficus glomerata. He is now working as Assistant Professor in Biotechnology.
