« Ce n'est point dans la société que vous trouverez la santé, mais dans la nature. » Ce recueil réunit l'essentiel des écrits de jeunesse que Thoreau publia dans la revue The Dial entre 1840 et 1844 : poèmes, proses critiques et descriptives, observations des rythmes naturels. On y voit naître son style et sa pensée, l'engagement de Thoreau en faveur de la nature se nourrissant de son goût pour la contemplation poétique et de son attachement aux lieux de sa naissance.
C'est dans les pages de The Dial, l'organe du mouvement transcendantaliste, dirigé par Emerson, que Thoreau devint l'un des auteurs majeurs de la littérature américaine, qui ne cesserait plus de plaider pour la réconciliation de l'homme avec les harmonies naturelles.
