The connection between mysticism and literature is both apparent and largely shared by various religions and cultures. The tradition of interpreting mysticism within its various contexts brings into play several paradigms, since the work of Michel de Certeau initiated a renewed interest in the manner in which we look at mysticism and its social and symbolic forms. De Certeau's work provides the connecting thread to the present study, allowing us to read mysticism and literature through a theoretical lens in the essays collected here which deal with European, African, American and Asian texts, from Indian mysticism to Nathaniel Hawthorne, from Teilhard de Chardin to Senghor and contemporary authors from the Maghreb, from the nineteenth-century tradition of literary discussions on mysticism to similarities one can find between its discourse and that of contemporary literary theory.
