Russia continues to be under sanctions as a result of the Crimea becoming part of Russia in 2014. The West believes it is necessary to pursue a policy of "deterrence of Russia" and sanctions play a significant role in this. Senior Russian officials assure that sanctions do not significantly harm the domestic economy, but rather promote its development. In all this one can see the geopolitical interests of the player countries, which thus harm each other: the U.S. is at the head of the West against Russia, or on the contrary, enter into allied relations: China is very closely cooperating with Russia. For example, the US continues to oppose the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. All new projects, in which Russian sub-sanctioners own 33% or more, fall under the restrictions. The range of Russian companies that could be subject to sanctions expanded in 2017.
