Food security and livelihoods is a socioeconomic issue of Nepal. There is still the problem of food and nutrition security and secure livelihoods for the poor and vulnerable communities of rural people of Nepal. In Nepal, around one -third of the fertile land has remained fallow due to seasonal migration of youth from Nepal to overseas countries. The remittance has become the source of income for livelihoods. The labor shortage has becoming the major problems in agricultural farming, production, processing, and manufacturing of goods and services in Nepal. Nepal is importing large quantities of cereal grains like rice, maize, wheat flour, legumes/pulses, vegetables, fruits, oils, etc from India, China and elsewhere though considered as agricultural country. The agricultural extension service is poor. The majority of the poor and middle class farmers have low access to agricultural extension services. The agriculture productivity is low. However, the distribution is the major problems rather than production. Nepal trade balance has remained negative. The good governance, rule of law, transparency and accountability are the challenges faced by the people to enjoy basic rights.
