« L'échec de Wilson » et autres textes


Trois textes méconnus, trois réflexions sur l'Histoire et l'édification d'un monde nouveau. Selon Zweig, « nous ne faisons qu'obéir à l'ordre incontestable de la Nature, lorsque, au lieu d'attacher notre regard aux ruines d'un monde qui s'écroule, nous essayons d'en construire un nouveau, qui soit meilleur que l'ancien ». L'Échec de Wilson montre comment le Président des États-Unis, Wilson, « ce pauvre rêveur », s'engagea sans succès en faveur de la réconciliation des États européens au sortir de la Première Guerre mondiale. Dans Les Pêcheurs du bord de Seine, Zweig évoque des hommes qui le jour de la mort de Louis XVI continuaient tranquillement à pêcher. Un récit sur le rôle que l'Histoire attribue à chacun d'entre nous quand s'ouvre une nouvelle époque. Enfin, dans un texte inédit, Zweig rend hommage à Rousseau, dont il considère chaque livre comme « une Révolution par écrit ».
