Les Odes composées par Friedrich Hölderlin sont construites sur des schémas syllabiques et rythmiques bien précis, inspirés de formes poétiques originaires de la Grèce antique.
Dans l'espoir de donner une idée de la musique qui s'y entend, les traductions françaises et anglaises ici présentées s'attachent à en reproduire la métrique.
Elles nous parlent d'une nostalgie de l'enfance de l'humanité, de la Grèce où s'entendait encore la voix des Dieux, et du danger qu'il y a à vouloir retrouver cette voix trop puissante qui est celle du réel sans médiation, ré-enchanté et par là-même foudroyant : « Car eux qui nous font le prêt du feu céleste, / Les dieux, nous font le don d'un saint mal aussi. » Mais c'est dans ce danger que se trouve aussi le salut, quelle que soit sa brièveté : « Lors, j'entends le sauveur dans la nuit, j'entends / Qu'il tue, le libérateur, que vie il donne. »

In the hope of giving an idea of the music they produce, the present French and English translations strive to reproduce their metrics.
They are speaking to us of a longing for the childhood of humankind, for Greece where the voice of the gods could still be heard, and of the danger lying in trying to find again that too powerful voice which is that of unmitigated reality, re-enchanted and therefore striking like lightning : « For they who lend us the fire of heaven, / The gods, with a holy pain endow us too. »
But it is in that danger that also lies salvation, however brief : « The savior I then hear in the night, I hear / Him kill, the liberator, and give life too. »
