On retrouve Antoine Sartori, personnage principal, sous-officier à la retraite, antisémite, anticommuniste. Déplorant la victoire des alliés, il regrette Pétain et son gouvernement et craint, pour le futur, la menace soviétique. Il note, jour après jour, les difficultés quotidiennes ainsi que ses remords.. car il ne fait aucun doute qu'il a envoyé une petite juive à la mort et qu'il pressent un châtiment.
