Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Physical Therapy / Occupational Therapy, printed single-sided, grade: 1,2, University of Teesside (Physiotherapy - School of Health and Social Care), course: Designing Research Projects, language: English, comment: Physiotherapy / Master of Science in Advanced Clinical Practice in Manipulative Therapy , abstract: Complaints about shoulder disorders constitute the third most common musculoskeletal cause for visiting a general practitioner (GP). Nearly seventy-five percent of the causes are due to impingement syndrome, in which the rotator cuff tendon is affected mostly. Furthermore, high rates of recurrence and chronicity can be seen. Exercise therapy is recommended; it plays a key part in the physiotherapeutic treatment options. However, there is still a lack of knowledge concerning the best exercise. Research demonstrates good results regarding the effectiveness of eccentric exercises in tendon pathologies, in general. Although some research has been conducted in terms of impingement syndrome, there is a lack of a systematic review in this field. The purpose of a systematic review is to provide clinicians, policy and decision-makers with the highest quality knowledge. In this paper, the author proposes to carry out a systematic review of the role of eccentric exercises in impingement syndrome. The proposal begins by developing background information and explaining key concepts, which, consequently, lead to its overall rationale. Also, research hypotheses, followed by the aims and objectives, are considered. The methodological part starts with the argument why a systematic review seems somehow appropriate to the underpinning theory. Moreover, this proposal outlines the eligibility criteria and the research strategy of the search to demonstrate its methods. Subsequently, the author describes the chosen procedure of data analysis in terms of extraction and synthesis. In the final part, ethical considerations referring to this proposal are given.
