Gleichwohl er sein gesamtes Leben malte, wurde seine Kunst zu Lebzeiten kaum gezeigt. Er verdiente seinen Lebensunterhalt mit Aushilfsjobs, ab 1958 als Pfleger der psychiatrischen Abteilung im Veteranenkrankenhaus in Montrose.
