0245, 6 December 1941. USS Swordfish spots the Japanese strike force 600 miles from Pearl Harbor. In this alternative history adventure, Japan cancels the attack, preventing U.S. entry into the war. Free from American interference, Hitler's scientists perfect an operational atomic bomb. Demonstrating this newfound power, Germany obliterates a remote British village thus blackmailing Britain into an armistice and forcing America to remain neutral. Undeterred, British Intelligence must ferret out Germany's atomic resources and destroy them. AGATHA, the stunning widow of a downed RAF pilot and superlative field agent in her cover as a neutral Swiss socialite in Berlin, becomes romantically involved with Luftwaffe General Peter von Zimmermann, pilot of the atomic attack, in hopes of gaining actionable intelligence. Discovering the atomic program's location, she leads an assault on the facility, but the Germans still have three operational bombs. Enraged, Hitler orders a strike on Moscow. Zimmermann, despite his confliction over Nazi tyranny, pilots the mission flying a prototype strategic bomber nicknamed "The Linden Tree."

Foreword

In addition to the standard marketing tools such as an author’s website and the various electronic communications, the author employs a number of additional marketing tools or opportunities, including:

  • Dr. Carpenter will present several multi-part lecture series on various military history topics ranging from the War of American Independence through the contemporary War on Terror conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. These lectures include World War II, which is the setting for The Linden Tree. At every lecture, the author’s fiction and non-fiction works are offered and a book signing is included;

  • Dr. Carpenter will present a similar lecture series at several senior retirement communities, particularly in Connecticut, with typical attendance of between 100 and 150 at which all the author’s books are offered and signed;

  • Dr. Carpenter frequently provides historical lectures at national (National Park Service) and state historical battlefield parks, including Guilford Courthouse in Greensboro, NC and Historic Camden in Camden, SC as well as for various historical societies and historically-based associations such as the Sons of the American Revolution. Although the lectures are focused on the War of American Independence, the book signing that follows offers all the fictional works as well as the non-fiction histories;

  • Dr. Carpenter appears regularly at New England area author expos and book fairs such as the Cumberland (RI) Library Author Meet and Greet, the Richmond (RI) Public Library Author Expo and the Warwick (RI) Public Library Book Expo where all fiction and non-fiction works are offered;

  • As an active member of the Association of Rhode Island Authors (ARIA), the Dr. Carpenter participates regularly in book venues such as the annual ARIA Book Fair held every December and the Boston (MA) Booksellers Convention;

  • The author has conducted book signings at the Middletown, RI Barnes & Noble store and will be holding another book signing later in 2020 before Christmas.

  • As a professor of Strategy at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, RI, the Dr. Carpenter is well-known in the military strategy, military history, and military affairs academic and scholarly community. Since a target audience for World War II military fiction is this particular community, personal contact and conference presentations at venues such as the Conference on the American Revolution in Williamsburg, VA, the American Revolution Conference at Fort Ticonderoga, NY, the Society for Military History annual conference, and the New York Military Affairs Symposium in New York, all generate marketing opportunities geared to a specific, targeted audience;

  • Dr. Carpenter regular appearances on radio interview shows and podcasts focused on history and the non-fiction work. The fiction works are always mentioned. For example, at a Fort Collins, CO radio station, the author is interviewed on the air at least twice yearly to discuss topics such as the Normandy Invasion and the Pearl Harbor attack where the station offers copies of the two previous novels (Genesis of ANTIMONY and Resurrection of ANTIMONY) as call-in giveaways.

  • Dr. Carpenter intends to advertise the novels in periodical magazine publications such as Military History and World War II, which reach a very large audience of military history readers, a targeted audience for military and military history-themed fiction.
