D'où vient le langage ? Est-il utile ? Quel sens caché révèle-t-il ? Qu'a-t-il à voir avec l'intuition ou la poésie ? De 1916, où il rédige, à 24 ans, l'un des textes fondateurs de sa pensée, « Sur le langage en général et sur le langage humain », jusqu'à sa mort, ces questions occuperont Walter Benjamin. En témoigne ce recueil, qui regroupe les textes composant la théorie du langage du philosophe : l'essai de 1916, mais aussi deux fragments des années 1920 sur le « squelette du mot », un micro-conte (« Pourquoi l'éléphant s'appelle " éléphant " »), et deux textes des années 1930 : « Problèmes de sociologie du langage » et « Sur le pouvoir d'imitation ».
