Un texte magistral, foudroyant et oublié de Stefan Zweig. Dans cette miniature historique, Cicéron devient pour Zweig un moyen de représenter sa condition d'exilé et de réfléchir sur le déclin de son époque et sur la défaite des valeurs humanistes. Écrit en 1939, à l'aube de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le récit se situe au croisement de la nouvelle et de la biographie : deux genres littéraires dans lesquels Zweig excelle.
