Admirable poète, « la dixième Muse » met au jour l'intrication désespérée de la souffrance (morale) et de la douleur (physique). Elle la révèle en la faisant chanter. Elle invente le mal d'amour. Écoutons la voix de Sappho, pour autant que nous pouvons l'entendre, vivante malgré les mutilations du temps. Dans ces poèmes, merveilleux de simplicité apparente, il faut aller à petits pas, s'interroger sur les mots les plus simples, ne pas les transformer en métaphore. S'attacher au texte, dans un travail artisanal, pour qu'une clarté, de temps à autre, nous foudroie. Ce livre réunit l'ensemble des fragments de Sappho.
