« La Consolation a été composée dans sa prison par un condamné à mort. L'admiration que cette oeuvre latine du VI^e siècle a suscitée sans interruption depuis ne doit pourtant rien, ou peu de chose, aux circonstances vraiment tragiques de sa composition. C'est un chef-d'oeuvre à la fois de la littérature et de la pensée européennes ; il se suffit ; il resterait tel, même si nous ignorions tout de celui qui l'a conçu entre deux séances de torture, dans l'attente de son exécution. Mais puisque ce chef-d'oeuvre n'est pas anonyme, il ne perd rien non plus à être replacé dans ses circonstances : il devient aussi le témoignage de la grandeur à laquelle un homme peut s'élever par la pensée, face à la tyrannie et à la mort. »
