John Gibson Lockhart
Some Passages in the Life of Mr Adam Blair is the story of a young Church of Scotland minister who, following the death of his wife, enjoys an extended visit from a married family friend, Charlotte Campbell. Charlotte has endured harassment and psychological abuse in her marriages, and Adam and Charlotte develop a mutually-supportive relationship; at least until a night of sexual passion changes their lives. Through strong, sympathetic characters, Lockhart challenges the reader to rethink the nature of social relationships and traditional gender roles.
This scholarly edition of Lockhart's best-known novel is the first modern publication based on the revised second edition, Lockhart's final text. The critical apparatus in this volume includes a thorough textual history based on comparative studies of the manuscript, corrected proof pages, first and second edition; extensive annotation; a Scots glossary; and a contextual introduction to provide the modern reader with the resources to re-evaluate Lockhart's place in the history of the Scottish novel and Romantic fiction.

John Gibson Lockhart (1794-1854), as an author and an editor, had a significant influence on literature of the nineteenth century. Although best known for his biography of Sir Walter Scott and a few scandalous reviews, his works include novels, poetry, translations, satirical sketches, additional biographies, and numerous essays on literary, political, and social subjects.
The Edinburgh Critical Edition of the Works of John Gibson Lockhart is both the first collected and scholarly edition of Lockhart's works. It provides authoritative texts and full scholarly apparatus to enable readers to assess fully Lockhart's literary achievement and his significance for nineteenth-century studies.

About the author
Thomas C. Richardson is Professor of English and holds the Eudora Welty Chair at Mississippi University for Women (MUW). He has also served as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Provost / Vice President for Academic Affairs at MUW. He previously held faculty appointments at North Carolina State University and Campbell University, as well as at the University of Glasgow as the Glasgow Herald Visiting Fellow in the Department of Scottish Literature.
