About the author
Shiva Naipaul was the younger brother of Nobel Prize–winning author V.S. Naipaul. He attended the Queen’s Royal College and St. Mary’s College in Trinidad before emigrating to the UK after winning a scholarship to study Chinese at Oxford. He is the award-winning author of the novels

A Hot Country, as well as three works of nonfiction,

An Unfinished Journey. He died in 1985.
