"Anfang der achtziger Jahre ging der in West-Berlin lebende Fotograf Udo Hesse mit seiner Kamera durch Ost-Berlin wie durch ein Land, das ihn an manchen Stellen an Vertrautes erinnerte und gleichzeitig immer wieder befremdete ... Der Nachkrieg dauerte lange in beiden Teilen der Stadt und im Ostteil wesentlich länger ... Entstanden ist ein fotografisches Dokument, das lakonisch, still und doch eindrücklich von einer vergangenen Zeit in einem vergangenen Land erzählt" (aus dem Vorwort von Andreas Krase). Im Anhang erzählt Udo Hesse auch von seiner Begegnung mit der Volkspolizei und Stasi. Einen kleinen Teil seiner damals beschlagnahmten Negative fand er in Form von Fotoabzügen 2007 in seiner Stasi-Akte wieder. Mehr als dreißig Jahre nach dem Fall der Berliner Mauer kann man Hesses Fotografien und damit das ehemalige Ost-Berlin heute noch einmal neu und anders sehen. Das innere Auge des Betrachters vergleicht die Bilder der Vergangenheit unwillkürlich mit der Gegenwart der neuen Mitte Berlins.
"In the early eighties, the photographer Udo Hesse, at the time living in West Berlin, walked with his camera through East Berlin, a place that to him was strangely familiar and disconcerting at the same time . . . The postwar period lasted long in both parts of the city and even longer in the east . . . The result is a photographic document that laconically, silently, and yet impressively tells of the past in a vanished country" (from Andreas Krase's foreword). In the appendix Udo Hesse also tells of his encounter with the East Berlin Police and the Stasi. He rediscovered a few prints of his then confiscated negatives in his Stasi files in 2007. More than thirty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Hesse's photographs (and the former East Berlin) can now be seen in a new and different light. The viewer's inner eye involuntarily compares the images of the past with the present of Berlin's new center.
