The Fondation Beyeler begins its fall exhibition season in 2019 with five women artists. Instead of a comprehensive group show with numerous works, the art of Leonor Antunes, Silvia Bächli, Toba Khedoori, Susan Philipsz, and Rachel Whiteread provide insight into various approaches to the space. The works of these artists create a specific sense of space-acoustically, as sculpture, or in drawings. In their appearance and presence, the works seem restrained and unobtrusive, but their effect is nevertheless strong and powerful. These works of art evoke spaces that lie somewhere in between the recognizable and the ephemeral. They create places and respites in which the faculty of memory is triggered, and images come to life.

LEONOR ANTUNES (*1972, Lisbon) refers to the history of art, design, and architecture, which she reinterprets in her sculptural installations. SILVIA BÄCHLI (*1956, Baden) deals with the medium of drawing. TOBA KHEDOORI (*1964, Sydney) is also devoted to drawing, especially large-format pieces. For SUSAN PHILIPSZ (*1965, Glasgow) sound is the artistic material she uses to create installations. The sculptor RACHEL WHITEREAD (*1963, London) explores space in her plastics.
