À la fin de 1960, Pasolini, alors déjà connu comme romancier et poète, entame sa carrière de cinéaste, avec le tournage d'Accattone. C'est peu après, que paraît La Religion de mon temps. Comme dans tous ses recueils, sa poésie est kaléidoscopique : intime, politique, descriptive, sociale, provocatrice, réflexive. Invectives et prières, clamées ou murmurées, confessions et dénonciations, contemplations et introspections, récits et dialogues intérieurs alternent dans ces poèmes animés comme il aimera le dire plus tard d'une « vitalité désespérée » .
La partie qui donne son titre à l'ensemble est une sorte de journal public. Témoin, compagnon, amoureux des pauvres, il tente de décrire un monde de la nuit et de la misère, riche d'une lumière que nous ne savons pas voir.
