Sixteen-year-old Mary Scotford is an orphan who lives with her foster family, the Adams. One night while struggling with all the emotions that accompany the recent loss of her father as well as the uncertainty surrounding her future, Mary decides to take a walk with her dog, Tippy.

Soon, Tippy races for a grove of trees surrounding a sinkhole and begins furiously barking. After Mary notices a pulsing, greenish light emerging from the area, she decides to investigate.
