About the author

Maria Shevtsova is Professor of Drama and Theatre Arts at Goldsmiths, University of London. She is known internationally for her books and other publications, which have been translated into many languages, and her participation in theatre festivals as well as scholarly events abroad, and her multimedia broadcasts. She is the co-editor of New Theatre Quarterly.

Summary

Konstantin Stanislavsky (1863–1938) was one of the most prominent and innovative directors of modern theatre, and his system and related practices continue to be studied and used in universities and in theatres. This book explores the extraordinary political contexts in which he resisted authoritarian pressures and developed his life's work.
