The global trend indicates that more and more people live and will continue to live in urban areas. Today cities are expanding both in physical size and numbers due to the rapid population growth along with sprawl development. Also noticeable is the increase in urban decay and informal settlements, presenting another challenge that most cities in developing countries have to deal with. This book proposes a practical guide for informal settlements upgrading of Afghan cities, especially Kabul city. The objective is to shift the urban upgrading strategies from single-sector interventions (sectoral development) to an integrated multi-sector upgrading and from piecemeal project-based to citywide informal settlement upgrading.
