Ces enfants nous touchent de près parce qu'ils sont en un certain sens des monstres : ils sont la monstrueuse réduction enfantine de toutes les névroses d'un citoyen moderne de la civilisation industrielle. En eux nous retrouvons tout, Freud, la massification, la culture absorbée par les Digests, la lutte frustrée pour le succès, la quête de sympathie, la solitude, l'arrogance, le consentement passif et la protestation névrotique. Mais tous ces éléments-là ne jaillissent pas tels que nous les connaissons, de la bouche d'un groupe d'innocents : ils sont pensés et restitués après avoir traversé le filtre de l'innocence.
