Women's empowerment in India is heavily dependent on many different variables that include educational status, social status (caste and class), age etc. Policies on women's empowerment exist at the national, state and local levels in many sectors, including health, education, economic opportunities, gender- based violence and political participation. In the recent years, various constitutional and legal rights have been implemented by the government of India in order to eliminate ill practices and gender discrimination against women. Ministry of Human Resource Development has established the Ministry for Women and Child Development in India in 1985 for the welfare and holistic development of women and children. The Government of India and the Ministry of Women and Child Development in particular is leading a number of schemes, programmes and legislation to improve the status of women as equal partners and active agents of change in the social, economic, cultural and political progress of the country.
