This book examines the challenges and planning problems posed by the growth of informal settlements in the Greater Karu Urban Area (GKUA). The population of area is estimated to be growing at about 44% per annum. This rate of growth has totally overwhelmed the planning authorities and the Nasarawa State Government to manage it. This research identified two types of informal settlements in the area; the inner core slums and the peri-urban mixed density/slum areas. Various growth-drivers; (internal and external) account for the growth and development; of these areas which pose various challenges and problems (of various degree of severity). More inclusive and pro-poor urban planning and management strategies are required to address the planning challenges and problems of the settlements.
