This volume, containing more than 150 comprehensively annotated letters, verse epistles, and other items, follows the young Boswell from Edinburgh to the end of his second visit to London, when he had his life-changing first meeting with Samuel Johnson. Among his many and various correspondents are the Irish actor and elocutionist Thomas Sheridan, an important early mentor, and Alexander Montgomerie, 10th Earl of Eglinton, who first introduced Boswell to the life of a London man of pleasure. Central to the volume, which helps define the context in which Boswell wrote his now widely read London Journal, 1762-1763, is his correspondence with Andrew Erskine, with whom in 1763 he published an irreverent volume of personal letters.
