« Ils peuvent me haïr, ils ne parviendront pas à m'apprendre la haine. »

« Au-dessus de la mêlée » est le plus célèbre manifeste pacifiste de la Grande Guerre. Comparable au « J'accuse » de Zola, il fut publié par Romain Rolland le 22 septembre 1914 dans le Journal de Genève. Ce texte exceptionnel, qui exhorte les belligérants à prendre de la hauteur pour saisir l'ampleur du désastre, provoqua aussitôt de nombreuses réactions violentes et haineuses envers son auteur, dont la lucidité, l'idéal de non-violence et de communion entre les peuples furent néanmoins récompensés, dès l'année suivante, par le prix Nobel de littérature.
