About the author

Charles Robert Darwin was a naturalist, geologist, and biologist, widely known for contributing to the understanding of evolutionary biology. His notion that all species of life have descended from a common ancestor is now generally accepted and considered a fundamental concept in science.

Peter Garratt is Associate Professor of English at Durham University. He has written and edited several books on Victorian literature and culture, often focusing on intersections between fiction, philosophy and science. His most recent title, as co-editor, is Nineteenth-Century British Literature and Philosophy, Vol. II: 1830–72 (2023).
