William E. Johnson, his father, was from South Carolina and settled in Camden in 1818, and in 1824 married Mary Cunningham Brown, daughter of Robert Brown and Elizabeth Cunningham Brown. He was prominent in mercantile and banking interests in the city of his adoption, and was in 1845 made President of the Bank of Camden.

Robert B. Johnson was educated in the common schools of Cam den. In 1842 he entered the South Carolina College, and is today (june lst, 1914) the oldest living alumnus of this institution. In 1845 Dr. Johnson married Jane Cunningham Mcwillie, daughter of William Mcwillie and Nancy Cunningham Mcwillie, of Cam den. In 1845 he entered the Medical College of the State of South Carolina, at Charleston, and graduated from this institution in 1847, and was in the active practise of his profession for a period of fifty-three years. Immediately upon his graduation Dr. John* son settled at Liberty Hill, a wealthy village in Kershaw county, and there practised medicine in conjunction with his large plant ing interests until 1852, when he removed to Camden, where he continued his practise until the beginning of the Civil War.
