Dans les années 1860 aux États-Unis, les pionniers partent coloniser l'Ouest. N'ayant pas voulu se joindre à l'un des grands convois protégés, Fanny Kelly, dix-neuf ans, se dirige vers les Rocheuses avec son époux, leur fille adoptive et quelques voyageurs. Le 12 juillet 1864, ils sont attaqués par des Sioux Oglalas qui emmènent la mère et l'enfant. Ignorant tout du sort de son mari et séparée de la fillette dès la première nuit, Fanny va rester prisonnière pendant cinq longs mois. Ces semaines de marches forcées, de faim, de terreur et d'espoir, mais aussi d'observations sur les moeurs et la culture des Sioux, elle les raconte dans ce document exceptionnel paru en 1871, servi par une vraie plume et nourri de portraits et de rebondissements dignes d'un grand roman d'aventures du XIX^e siècle.
