La más autorizada pluma de la ama artística portuguesa, bien conocida de toda Europa, D. Joaquín de Vasconcellos, dice: Já em 1877 apontámos para a existencia de quadros Ha mengos en Portugal antes da vinda de Jean van Eyck. Em 1415 mandou o Duque Jean sans peur de Borgonha, 1404-1409, o seu retrato a el rei D. Joao I, feito por Jehan Malwel o Melluel, que foi pintor official do Duque de 1397 al 1415, anno que mor reu, tendo concluido pouco antes o retrato. Y, en efecto, desde ya tan remota fecha la cuestión de la existencia de una antigua escuela de pintura portuguesa anterior a la ida de van Eyck a Portugal ha apuntado constantemente en los trabajos del señor Vasconcellos', como en los de los Sres.
